Sometimes, you just want to stare at a colourful, mesmerising animation of fluid dynamics, interacting with it lazily only every now and then as you zone out and empty your mind. Here is a link to an interactive, minimalist 2D fluid dynamics simulation implemented by software engineer Raoul Harel at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, based on the ‘Real-Time Fluid Dynamics for Games’ paper by Jos Stam. On his webpage, you can find this very accessible paper for non-physicists, as well as instructions on possible interactions with the simulator.

This essay, written with my friends and fellow researchers, examines a major bottleneck in modern science: the loss of knowledge from failed or discontinued research. We argue that these so-called dead ends are often the starting points for iterative improvement, and that preserving them through structured reporting, shared databases and reformed publishing practices could make research more efficient, collaborative and transparent.
